What Are Fulani Braids?
Fulani braids come from the Fulani people of West Africa, where braided patterns and adornments have been part of the culture for generations. Today’s Fulani style usually has three parts: cornrows braided toward the face or along the sides, a single braid down the center of the head, and box braids or cornrows in the back. Beads, gold cuffs, and shells finish the look.
Popular Fulani Styles
- Classic Fulani braids. The traditional pattern with a center braid, side cornrows, and beads.
- Knotless Fulani braids. Cornrows up front with lighter knotless braids in the back.
- Boho Fulani braids. Loose curls mixed in for a softer, carefree look.
- Custom patterns. Zigzag parts, heart designs, or a side part. Bring a photo and we’ll make it yours.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Plan for about 4 to 6 hours. Come with your hair washed, dried, and detangled unless you’ve booked a wash. We’ll map out your pattern before we start so the parts are clean and the braids sit right. If you’re bringing your own beads or cuffs, pack them with you.
How to Care for Your Fulani Braids
- Sleep in a satin scarf or bonnet to keep your cornrows neat.
- Keep your scalp moisturized with a light oil, especially along the cornrows.
- Be gentle with beads when you sleep and style.
- Take them down or refresh them around 4 to 6 weeks.
